Waterford Treasures 25 Years

Waterford Treasures celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, having first opened its doors in 1999. The organisation has grown into a collection of five museums plus a Viking Virtual Reality Experience at the Viking House and the EPIC Guided walking tour, all located in Waterford’s historic core, the Viking Triangle.

To honour 25 years of welcoming visitors from all over the world, Waterford Treasures will host the international conference “Waterford and the Wider World 1500–1800” on 8th & 9th November.

This conference will offer an opportunity to hear international experts from Newfoundland, New York, Spain, France, Italy, Scotland and Ireland share their research into Waterford’s international connections with England, Europe and the Americas, East Indies and Asia, and the Caribbean, including the question of involvement in the slave trade.

Guest speakers on “Waterford, England and the Atlantic – sixteenth and seventeenth centuries” are Susan Flavin of Trinity College Dublin on “Commodities and Commerce: Waterford Merchants and the sixteenth-century Consumer Boom” and David Brown, also of Trinity College Dublin, will focus on “Waterford and Revolution: Waterford’s old merchants and England’s new merchants during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, 1638–1660”.

The keynote will be given by Julian Walton (Dunhill Multi-Education Centre): “ ‘Spiting the Penal Laws’: Researching Irish Merchants in eighteenth-century Andalucía: A Personal Odyssey”.
