Sandymount Hotel Marks 70th
The Sandymount Hotel in Dublin is celebrating 70 years of continuous family ownership and hospitality this May - longer than any other hotel property in Dublin.
Originally opened in 1955 as a modest bed and breakfast, the hotel has since grown into one of the capital’s most respected four-star properties.
In an era when many city hotels are under corporate ownership, the Loughran family remains committed to offering a uniquely Irish and independent experience.
To mark the milestone, the hotel hosted a celebratory event for the local community, long-standing staff, and friends of the hotel.
It all began in 1955, when George and Rosaleen Loughran purchased No. 7 Herbert Road and opened a small bed and breakfast to support their growing family. As demand grew, so did the hotel, gradually expanding into neighbouring properties and evolving into the much-loved 187-bedroom hotel it is today.
Rebranded from Mount Herbert Hotel to The Sandymount Hotel in 2011 to reflect its unique sense of place, the hotel is now led by the third generation of the Loughran family, who have recently overseen a refurbishment of rooms and guest areas. The family has also embraced sustainability, with recent upgrades including the installation of electric vehicle charging points.
Co-owner Gerard Loughran said:
“This anniversary is deeply personal for me, my family and our loyal staff. It’s not just about a building or a number - it’s about the thousands of moments, memories and connections that have shaped The Sandymount Hotel and our family over seven decades. We’re incredibly proud to continue the legacy my grandparents began back in 1955, and to do so alongside a team whose loyalty, kindness and care have been the heart of this place from the beginning.”
