Passing of John Toner

The passing over the weekend of John D. Toner (77) has evoked emotions of sadness and love within the Irish hospitality industry.

A distinguished hotelier and a consummate professional, he will be remembered as an empathic human and a true gentleman.

He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a hotel manager and was an inspiring member of the Irish Hospitality Institute, which he presided over as president for two terms from 1999. John remained an active member until his illness made travel increasingly difficult over the past year.

Much of his career was with the Hastings Hotel Group, and he served as general manager at several of its properties including the Europa in Belfast and the Slieve Donard in Newcastle, Co. Down.

In a 2024 memoir, A Job Well Done, he recounted his personal life and career.

He is survived by his wife Cathy; sons Paul, Gareth and Matthew; daughters Ciara and Claire; and an extended family. His funeral mass takes place at Our Lady of the Assumption Church Newcastle to-day (Monday 13th January) at 12 noon. Burial to follow in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Bryansford.
