€9m Conferences for Galway

The Galway Convention Bureau has confirmed that it has secured just over €9 million of new conference and event business for Galway

which will deliver over 5,600 international delegates to Galway in events to take place up to 2022.
The Galway Convention Bureau, formerly the voluntary marketing group, ‘Meet in Galway’ promotes Galway as a destination for international meetings, conferences and events and has recently secured Fáilte Ireland status as a convention bureau. The addition of the status will allow the Galway Convention Bureau to align with national strategy in regard to attracting international business tourism, create and promote the profile of the region and generate leads for the region and its members.
 Welcoming the new business, Darragh O’Connor, Galway Convention Chairperson said that Galway was now firmly established in the global business tourism arena;
“It is a fantastic achievement for the team here at the Galway Convention Bureau and indeed for all event and tourism businesses in the region. Typically the business visitor is worth up to three times that of the leisure tourist and meetings tend to take place outside the main summer months which will lead to an extension of the season for many of our tourism sector businesses. Through the hard work and dedication of the Convention Bureau and its members, Galway is successfully competing to win international business tourism events and I look forward to announcing even more wins in the near future.”
The conferences planned for 2018 include:
* Euro IX Forum (European Internet Exchange Association) delivering 150 international delegates
* European Society of Evolutionary Development Biology Conference delivering 425 international delegates
*International American Society for Metals, Topical Conference on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies delivering 100 international delegates
* European Orthopaedic Research Society delivering 500 international delegates
 Paul Mockler, Head of Commercial Development at Fáilte Ireland welcomed the new conference wins for Galway and also congratulated the Galway Convention Bureau for recently obtaining Convention Bureau status.
“The Convention Bureau has done tremendous work in attracting a number of high profile conferences which will bring a very welcome economic boost to the entire region. Bringing such conferences to the regions is an important part of Fáilte Ireland’s strategy for increasing regionality and lengthening out the season. We would also like to congratulate all those involved in the ‘Meet in Galway’ voluntary group who worked so hard over the last number of years to achieve convention bureau status for Galway. It is a marvellous achievement and we look forward to working with the team here in securing further international business tourism events for Galway and the region.”
 Darragh O’Connor concluded by announcing the appointment of Rose Finn as Convention Bureau Manager.
 The convention bureau is supported by Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Airport, Galway City and Galway County Council, The Western Development Commission and trade memberships. The convention bureaus strategic partners include the National University of Ireland Galway, The Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, the Galway Chamber of Commerce and the Galway branch of the Irish Hotel Federation.
