Three hotels on 'Gold List'

Nast Traveler's Gold List of "the best hotels in the world" for 2018.

Dromoland Castle is described as an "outrageously beautiful" sixteenth century fortified castle on a 410-acre estate where guests are made to "feel like royalty".

In its assessment of Ballyfin, the American travel bible says, "If you've ever dreamed of summering at a country house, you couldn't do much better than this stately, 20-room Georgian home."

Commenting on the Merrion Hotel, Condé Nast says, "From the grand marble lobby to the manicured garden, the hotel is a calming, peaceful sanctuary in the middle of Dublin."

Pub sales down in 2017

Figures released by commercial property consultant CBRE show a total of 20 pubs were sold in Dublin in 2017, down from 30 sales in 2016. The value of the pubs sold last year was €22 million compared to €43 million the previous year.

The project to conserve the ‘Heartbreak Pier’ in the Co Cork harbour town will provide a chance for visitors to set foot on the last piece of Ireland touched by over a million emigrants

Part of the story will be further told as visitors take to the proposed new walkway just above the old pier, which is believed to be over 150 years old.

Work could begin at Cobh pier in months if planning permission is granted, with a target of completion by March 2019.

Ryanair carried 129m in 2017

Ryanair saw its traffic go up 3% to 9.3m customers in December 2017.

It means passenger numbers for the airline for 2017 increased by 10% to 129 million customers.

Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: "Ryanair’s December traffic grew by 3% to 9.3m customers, while our load factor jumped 1% to 95%, on the back of lower fares in December.
