Extra €4.2m for Tourism

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport is to spend an additional €4.2 million on  tourism related projects, including further development of Ireland’s Ancient East corridor and the Wild Atlantic Way. 
 The funds are part of an extra allocation of €100m to the Department, most of which will be spent on the roads networdk
 This brings the Department’s overall capital envelope for the year to €1.07 billion. 

Legion Honour for Gilbaud

Restaurateur Patrick Guilbaud has been awarded the Legion d’Honneur for his work as a French citizen in the fine dining industry.

The  French-born chef received the award for his “45 years of service” as a chef and restaurant owner, the Legion d’Honneur said.
 The award is the highest honour that can be bestowed by the French government, and is typically rewarded to French citizens.
Mr Guilbaud’s restaurant, established in 1981, is currently the only one in Ireland with two Michelin stars. It moved from its former premises at St James’s Place off Baggott Street to the current surroundings at the Merrion Hotel in 1997.
The award comes after new accounts filed by the restaurant’s Becklock Ltd show accumulated profits increased from €356,256 to €444,295 in 2014.
 
 

RAI Opposes Wage Increase

The Restaurants Association os Ireland is among employer groups opposed to a proposed 50c per hour increase in the National Minimum Wage.

 The RAI has opposed any increase in the minimum wage of €8.65 ahead of reports that the Low Pay Commission is expected to recommend a rise of 50 cent per hour.
 
The commission will present its report to Minister for Business and Employment Ged Nash over the next few days. 
 
The RAI said a 50 cent increase in the minimum wage would have a disproportionate negative impact on restaurants outside of the greater Dublin area and would lead to job losses.

Killarney woos 'Spiritual Tourists'

A new brand of 'spiritual tourism' has been launched in Killlarney.

The aim of thee Chamber of Commerce initiative is to capitalise on Killarney’s long spiritual tradition, the launch meeting at St Mary’s Church of Ireland was told .
The town which means “Church of the Sloes” was named after an ancient church and holy well complex on the site of St Mary’s and the adjacent town hall.
The idea is “to make visible to the tourist the historical and present spirituality of this place”, according to the “spiritual heritage: spiritual tourism” plan circulated at the launch.
