Sodexo Manager Awarded €47,552

Sodexo Ireland has been ordered to pay €47,552 to a manager it unfairly dismissed in 2020 through redundancy.sodexo
At the Workplace Relations Commission, adjudicator Patsy Doyle has ordered Sodexo Ireland Ltd to pay the equivalent of 40 weeks gross pay to Integrated Facilities Manager, Terence Varian, after finding that she could not identify a dismissal which arose from a genuine redundancy.
Ms Doyle stated that Sodexo Ireland did not provide her ‘with compelling details of economic, technical or organisational change’, concerning the redundancy.
Ms Doyle did find that Mr Varian ‘played a part in his own demise at the business’. She rejected a request from Mr Varian that he be reinstated as ‘relations between the parties are not redeemable’.
Counsel for Mr Varian, Byron Wade BL told the WRC hearing that Mr Varian had been the subject of a ‘sham redundancy’ when he was dismissed on 9th September 2020.
Mr Varian was on an annual salary of €61,817 plus bonus and in response to the Covid-19 impact on the business, Sodexo Ireland Ltd declared an 11pc reduction of a 2,000 strong workforce across four locations in the months of July, August and September 2020.
