Ireland will see a decline in Michelin star restaurants if the government introduces a "draconian regime" of mandatory calorie information on menus, according to chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI), Adrian Cummins.

 The Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, launched the ten-year obesity policy and action plan last week, saying: "Government can and must help to empower people make these healthy choices. We have a responsibility to influence the environment and conditions which help people to have their desired quality of life."

Dublin Airport has won a major global aviation industry marketing award. The airport was named the 2016 World Routes Award winner for airports in the 20-50 million 

passengers per year category.

Dublin Airport picked up the award at the World Routes conference in Chengdu, China. This is the second time in three years that Dublin Airport has won the award, having been shortlisted for the award three years in a row.

The World Routes Awards were created in 1997 to recognise excellence in marketing by airports to their airline customers, and are voted on exclusively by the global airline industry. That means that they offer senior airline representatives the opportunity to vote for the airport that they believe provides the best overall marketing services to them. 

 

 

 GMIT hosted The Éamonn Ceannt Tribute Dinner in the Institute’s Connemara Room Training Restaurant to mark the 135th anniversary of the birth of Éamonn Ceannt – one of the seven signatories of the 1916 Proclamation.

 The dinner, which GMIT held in partnership with Galway County Council, was prepared and served by the students and staff of the college, under the guidance of lecturers Noel Loughnane and Diarmuid O’Conghaile. 

'Irish Pubs' from around the world are represented at this year’s Irish Pubs Global Gathering, which opened in Dublin yesterday.

The event  features discussion abut food and drink trends, entertainment, boosting profitability, and pub design. This year’s theme is ‘creating a destination pub’ and participants include Peter Nash from Tourism Ireland, Kevin Arundel, chef and owner of the Chop House gastropub, Anna McNally from the Irish Pub Company, and Kevin Martin, author of 'Have Ye No Homes To Go To — The History of the Irish Pub'

 Senator Billy Lawless will deliver the keynote address to more than 600 Irish pub operators from Ireland and abroad. Formerly head of the Vintners Federation Ireland (VFI), he is the owner of a number of pubs and restaurants in Chicago, employing more than 300 people. Before emigrating to Chicago in the 1990s, he was a prominent publican and hotelier in his native Galway.
